The Question from Jwalita

Jwalita (our 8 year old daughter) asked me a question this morning (Fri 15 July 2005). She wondered if anyone knew the answer to this question and then asked me to ask people at my work. I cannot really trouble people at work with her silly questions but I thought I will post the question on web and invite all wise persons to try and answer it.

Thanks.

This morning I was a bit late getting up. Jwalita got up and came to my bed. After prattling for a while she said, "Did you know Papa, when I want to move my toe, my brain sends a signal to my toe to move."

Then she asked, "What happens if the toe doesn't receive the signal?"

I replied that in that case the toe doesn't move. She said, "Yes but then the brain sends another signal so that the toe moves." I had to agree that this must be true.

Finally she added, "But then who tells the brain to send a signal to move the toe?"

In other words Jwalita wants to know, "Who am I?"

Jwalita also said that from now on she is going to work on this question. Her mother goes to the National Library to study so Jwalita is thinking of spending a lot of time in the National Library working on this question.
