Monier-Williams -- Title Page

This HTML version of the Monier-Williams Sanskrit-English Dictionary¹⁾ stems from a text file of the Cologne Digital Sanskrit Lexicon (CDSL). The CDSL itself results from a project described in the Report on the Cologne Sanskrit Dictionary Project.²⁾

This version is available through the generosity of Drs Thomas Malten (Universität zu Köln) and Claude Setzer (Fairfield, Iowa). Dr Malten kindly allowed the lexicon to be made available in this form.³⁾ Dr Setzer provided a CD-ROM of the lexicon without which this version could not have been made.⁴⁾

These files were produced by altering and removing markup in the original. For screen shots of the lexicon viewed in the WWW browsers `Lynx-2.8.4.1c' and `Linux-Mozilla-1.2' under the operating system `FreeBSD 4.8-RC' see : mw_a_lynx.png & mw_a_mozilla.png.

To allow free access to the data compiled it is necessary to impose as little as possible restrictions on lexical databases. In the light of the development in the protection of database in the EU and WIPO with the danger that commercial publishers may want to appropriate rights it seems desirable to have high quality Sanskrit databases freely available to all researchers.
